Simple break points for the decision.
430 VFR with occasional light IFR (don't even bother flaming about
'light'!) and a lot of 'direct'
530 VFR with more regular IFR
480 IFR on a regular basis, especially in complex air space (northeast,
southern CA)
As Ron mentioned, the 480 combined with the MX20 (or the MX200, a new
iteration), is a powerful combination that once familiar with the menus
system, is very intuitive and much more user friendly than the 430/530.
