There should be no question about applying a protective coating of some kind on all surfaces that might (will) someday have fluids spilled on them.  Even fixed gear Lancairs have fuel and brake fluids that can leak and soak into the prepreg.  I have been very happy with the results of using PPG DP50LF epoxy primer mixed about 50/50 with the regular Jeffco construction epoxy.  Huh?  I mix the DP50LF/DP401LF per directions and mix an approximately equal amount of the Jeffco 1307LV/3102 and then dump the two together and stir.  Brush this in place and it gives a very durable surface.  Two coats seem about right.  I also use this as a wheel well coating.  Sure makes spill clean up easier.
