I'm just guessing here, but I suspect it was done much the same way as Formula One at Reno; short prop and high RPM.  I believe they run their O-200s at something over 4000 RPMs.  In 1999 Jon Sharp qualified at 263.118 mph on a 3.11 mile closed course.  I'm sure Klaus' plane is heavier with more wing area than a Formula One, but he wasn't turning left all the time either.
