They both coated both inside and out of the pipes to prevent uneven expansion of the metal. The result is that more heat goes out the pipes and less radiates inside the cowl. Also, the pipes cool off so quickly after shutdown you can put your hands on them within a few minutes. Skip Slater N540ES
