Chris,
If you buy the "CHAMPION CT-457 GAP TOOL" from Aircraft Spruce (part # 12-00798, $31.95), you will see a wide and narrow setting. I believe that the wide means for the wide electrode of the platinum plug while narrow is for the smaller electrode of the iridium plug. If you use the wide setting, the gap will be set at .016" just like on a standard plug. If you use the narrow setting the gap will be set at .024".
I use the iridium plugs with the gap set at .024". I have standard 4000 series Slicks with 1,200 hours on them. The engine starts on the 1st blade and runs as smooth as silk with the larger gap. Remember that mags put out more spark as they turn faster. If the engine starts with a wider gap, it should run fine at that setting.
Will the wider gap shorten the mag life? My mags have have been running the iridum plugs for the last 400 hours with the wider setting for the last 300 hours. Champion's own gauge says that the gap should be wider on the iridium plugs that on any other plug.
I asked 2 of the Champion representatives at Sun'N'Fun about the wider setting produced by their own gauge. They had NO clew what I was talking about. They thought that all plugs should have the same gap setting.
I think that my engine now starts faster and runs smoother with the iridium plugs set at the wider gap.

Does anyone know if there are any practical or operational differences between Champion's Iridium and Platinum spark plugs (REM38P vs REM38S)?
