I hate to second guess a very dynamic situation. I had a similar
experience. I picked up ice (a splash) 17,000 in clouds on Florida,
pitot heat off lost airspeed indicator. Went to instruments hit speed
brakes, started down using attitude indicator then turned on pitot heat.
What was most distracting; immediate decompression due to loss of
airspeed indicator. IVP have a safety switch that dumps pressurization
when speed is low to prevent landing with pressure. Of course next most
distracting when the airspeed comes back so does pressure. 456A Greg

Sounds like a little pitot heat "on" could have prevented most of this. If you are going to fly high then pitot heat should be on your "before takeoff" checklist.
