I orginally had what I thought was a starter relay for my starter. After it welded itself closed, I investigated. I turned out to only be a continuous duty relay, eventhough it was being sold as a starter relay. Make/break current rating was only 85A. Continuous current on my starter is about 150A. The highest we measured was 350A at start of cranking. I forget the rating of my current starter relay, but it is in line with the actual needs of the system. There is a difference between continuous and intermittent duty relays and they really can't be switched.
