 I have the same problem at my airport but the problem is me. The  Detroit
approach controllers (when doing flight following) do not  like to let me go
until I am within about 3 miles from the airport. I  generally say that I have
the airport in sight (even when I don't)  when I am out 10 miles. Then I have
time to listen and talk.
