  You can take the cowl leading edge right up to the spinner.  My cowl leading
edge is slightly radiused to fit just inside the trailing edge of the spinner.
 This prevents contact with engine movement since the spinner, when moving
vertically, is really travelling on a bit of the arc.  I would be a little
more concerned with the vertical shift and loss of alignment during sagging of
the mounts than any fore and aft movement.  I would also recommend flying in
primer for a while to eliminate all the guess work on final engine position.
