This brings up unnecessarily high approach speeds again, but we won't go there.

Gang, let me just add that proper training should include short field techniques and proficiency.  You owe it to yourself to be able to competently fly your airplane within the performance envelope....your first short field landing should not be an engine out emergency, but unfortunately it seems many of us only use their instructors to get them proficient in vanilla operation...after all, it costs more to spend a couple of hours practicing the techniques than can be the difference between life and death.  Tell your wife/accountant (sometimes one in the same...LOL!)  it's a life insurance policy....and just do it!  You won't be disappointed and you'll be a much more capable and confident pilot as a result...not only that, it's fun!  ;)

Cheers,

Barry
