Dan,
Take the hint of a previous writer and use .080" aluminum for the entire
door. Make the door big enough to cover the opening plus about an inch
extra on the hinge side. Place the hinge flat on the fuselage skin with
the hinge pin about an inch from the side of the tunnel.. Use a
carbonfiber hinge and bond it directly to the skin. Now pop rivet the
aluminum door to the hinge and micro fill to a taper to make it beautiful.
This makes the entire opening available for the gear without sharing it
with screws which tend to catch on the gear as it goes up into the
opening. Extend the hydraulic rod end attach fitting. Make the hinge pin
removable to remove the door if necessary.
