According to the Orin at the factory, taping the gap between the wing root
and the wing reduces the stall speed 5 to 10 Kts! Orin swears that this is
good empirical data achieved by flying the same AC with and without the
tape. When they tried this in Derek Hine's AC the improvement was less than
5 Kts. Derek's AC, Like mine, has a joggle at the wing to fairing interface
so that there is a seam but no airflow across it.
The joggle was formed by taping a 1 inch wide strip trimmed from the fairing
flush with the end of the wing. The strip is covered in release tape and 4
bid x 2 inch is laid over it. The strip is removed, leaving the joggle with
just the right depth for the fairing.
To fit the fairing, install the "joggled" wings and trim the fairings. The
foam bulkhead can be eliminated, except in the flap area, because the wing
now supports the fairing. Leave a 2mm gap for the fuselage to expand during
pressurization.
Works for me ;)
