Interesting question.

I flew in unsanded primer for two years. After upholstery, and paint, (Slick finish and 60lbs later) my plane was about 5 knots slower.  Go figure!!!

Does the supersonic fighters have a slick painted surface or a mat finish?  Doesn't a slight turbulance or trapped boundary layer of air offer a better surface for flight? What say you air racers and aeronautical engineers?

Practically speaking, I was glad the plane was proved in primer. I did some body work, fixed some tolerance issues and trued out two flight surfaces before color coat. Plane is now perfectly trimmed.
