Wally,
Thanks for reiterating what I have said many times: I have a close business
relationship with Chelton Flight Systems and have been involved in most of
their designs, which makes everything I say biased. But you should also keep
the flip side in mind: my experience helps me cut through marketing hype.
Acording to Boeing, "THE" Boeing EFB is manufactured by Astronautics, which
Boeing claims is "the industry standard" in their various press releases (I am
merely quoting Boeing, not agreeing with that claim).
There are literally dozens of EFBs in the market which are being evaluated,
or even being used by, various airlines around the world and other non-airline
operators. The claim "Our EFB is being used on a Boeing 777" really does not
add up to much and the claim that "We make THE EFB for Boeing 777" sounds
misleading. Since 1997, I have helped designe 5 different EFBs for different
companies, including Boeing, and all of them have at one point or another
flown on a Boeing airplane.
And last, but not the least, the certification for a Class II EFB is orders
of magnitude simpler than a Class A or Class B primary flight display.
The point of my original e-mail was to that one should pay attention to facts
and performance and not claims and hype. I stand by that.
Regards,
Hamid
