A question for the motorheads in the group about water in the fuel.  We go to great lengths to prevent water contamination with separators etc., but on the other hand hear about water injection in WWII piston aircraft and some Reno racers for extra HP.  What gives?  Is this not a contradiction?

No contradiction.  Problem causing water arrives as a slug - and as we all know, water by itself is not a very good fuel in a gasoline engine.
