following on from the torqued to death thread... try this little thought experiment
 
an aeroplane weighing 4,000lbs, full span huge ailerons, with a huge engine producing an enormous torque, lets say 4,000lbs at the wing centre span. In flight the torque is balanced by the port aileron down producing 2,000lbs of extra lift, and the stbd aileron up producing 2,000lbs of negative (down) lift. The stbd wing net lift is now zero so unbolt it and let it go. Voila! the one wing plane.
