I believe the counterotating propellor was designed to minimize the effects of torque roll on wave off from a carrier's deck which in those days was fore and aft and had a crash barrier to stop you getting into the aircraft parked forward of the barrier, if you screwed up and missed the wire.
 
There were actually two propellors turning in opposite sense.  This negated the torque roll when going to full power. Imagine the gearing involved to make this happen.
 
And guys this all I know!  I do not understand the engineering factors involved in this but I have seen them in action.  Please do not ask me to explain!!!!
