Jim,
Dang, sounds soooo familiar to me. Maybe I can shed a little
bit of light.
I bought a LNC2 360 that used to have a manual trim system
like the one you used. This owner switched to a electric trim system with a
elevator mounted tab about a year or so into the airplane's life. Fast forward
about ten years to when I bought the airplane (Aug of last year)... I could NOT
trim out the aft stick pressure during approach or slow flight with flaps. It
seemed very wrong to me... I did NOT like that...
I built and installed a MUCH larger elevator trim tab based on
the size of the ones I saw on Mk II Lancairs... It'a actually not as big as
those. Mine also has the small tail. So, my tab grew from the one it had when I
bought it (I'd say about 6 inches long and 1 inch in chord) to one that is about
a foot long and 1 1/4 inch in chord. BAM! I could trim the aft stick pressure
away with flaps on approach.
Now, I just need to make a simple control arm adjustment that
allows me just a skosh more nose down trim at faster speeds. I think the tab is
close to be sized right, just need to tweak the arm from the servo motor to the
tab.
I can easily trim away control forces during approach, but at
cruise speed and faster, it's mere ounces of control pressure to keep level. I
just need to make the adjustment for a bit more nose down trim force. If you
want, give me about 4 days and I can forward some photos.
