Bill,
The fastbuilt doors in use at Lancair today use the 120 psi struts and are
mounted differently in a way that open the door way up. The strut is secured
to the door right below and on the windowside of the center hinge with the
other end secured to the door frame just above the cut-out for the top hinge.
The older style struts were 90 psi and were mounted between the door (near the
door seal pump) and the door frame (near where the shoulder belt bolt is
installed to the fuselage). This arrangement opens the door in a gull-wing
fashion. I have s/n 148 with a slowbuilt door and also experience some
shifting after installing the strut. Closes and latches perfectly without the
strut but shifts about 5/16 (more than by the book and what the guide pin can
control) when the strut is installed. Tried adjusting/shimming the strut to
change angle but no change. Will try the fastbuilt install method with the 120
psi strut to see how that works befor opting to use a guide block/strike plate
set-up.

After my little mishap (ground accident) a while back, I noticed that my
door strut was not able to keep my door open. This is in a L-IVP. I
purchased a new strut from Vern and after I installed it, I noticed that
the door was not closing quite right. There was a bulge, that from the
outside, looked like it was in the location of the strut retaining bracket.
