In real life, I manage a couple of airports in the Kansas City suburbs (OJC & IXD, http://jcac.jocogov.org if you're interested). I've had two thoughts rattling around in my head for awhile: (1) I need to get re-energized about flying my little hot-rod (only flew 38 hours last year!), and (2), I've been thinking about hosting an annual experimental fly-in at IXD (lots of room). I actually talked to Tom Poberezny a few years ago about a regional EAA fly-in for the central US. He was mildly interested, but I never followed through. I got cold feet because I have produced air shows in the past and wasn't sure I wanted to suffer the brain damage again. We also hosted the Kansas City Air Races (Reno-style race for unlimiteds) here in 1993, and it was not a pleasant experience (the organizer turned out to be a crook). So given items 1 and 2 above and the fact that I need a little excitement in my life, and given that we need a new race venue... you see where I'm going with this? Of course, the big issue with racing, er "timed events," is insurance. I need to check with our risk management people to confirm this, but I believe if our Airport Commission, which is a governmental entity created by state statute, is the organizer of the event, we would be protected by statutory tort limitations for local governments in Kansas. This would be a good thing for us as the organizer, but maybe not so good for the victims of any misfortune we might have. We could also do formation clinics, Pete could do his Lancair training, we could have builder workshops, the possibilities are endless!!! OK, somebody talk me out of this quick!
