Traffic monitors receive your transponder replies and compares them to
others for the altitude determination from the Mode C altitude squawk and
distance from the signal strength. Any transponder antenna is appropriate
since the monitor is working in the transponders frequency range.
Reception is sensitive to antenna orientation and to blockages such as
those from the engine, carbon spar caps and people.
Since my Lancair had little space at the top of the dust shield, I first
placed the antenna vertically on the hat shelf. This arrangement worked
so-so until I had a passenger along, then it worked less than so-so - especially
for traffic out in front and below. My transponder antenna is on the
bottom of an outboard wing panel so the latest iteration was to mount a Comant
high speed blade antenna on the bottom of the other wing. This arrangement
seems to work well for me since the only interference between the two antennae
is my pitot or the gear when extended in the airport environment - a time when I
don't want the monitor to be bleeping away anyhow.
