Subject: [LML] Re: ES Instrument panel
support mounts
Steve,
In addition to the mounting
brackets you bond to the side of the fuselage, Lancair recommends one support
bar attached between the plane and the top center of the backside of the
panel made from aluminum tubing with the ends flattened so you can put a bolt
or screw through them. I don't recall the
chapter, but it's in the manual.
When I did this I found that the
upper sides of my panel could move (flex) quite a bit. To fix that I
added two additional support bars that attach to the panel on either side of
center just before it begins curving down. All three of the
supports are anchored on the shelf behind the panel and I have countersunk #10
phillips screws attaching them to the top edge of the panel.
Countersinking was necessary so the screws didn't stick up and interfere
with the glareshield. I believe I put nutserts in the panel ends of
the supports and used AN-3 bolts on the shelf ends. My panel is rock
solid with this configuration. Sorry, but I couldn't find any photos of
the back of my panel to illustrate this for you.
