The UK changed over to metric in stages, starting with measurements. When they changed from gallons (real Imperial ones, not these pansy US gallons) to liters, there was a revolt. So the change from miles to kilometers was stopped. Permanently. Only in the UK do you measure fuel consumption in litres per 100 miles. A superb British compromise. I had to move to Texas.
