Walter, I see now what you're saying.  You're right, of course, a stalled compressor would reduce the airflow dramatically and could probably do exactly as you say. Naf

 I would suspect a compressor stall rather than the turbine.  Most of my exciting bangs in pure jets have been from the compressor stalling.
