To US citizens,
switching to METAR was only for the FAA adopting an ICAO standard, used all
over the world by pilots, but by FAA. Now everybody has the met. datas in the
same order ,all over the world.
I know US controlers have great difficulty to adopt standard ICAO when
speaking in their microphone, they use their aeronautical slang, and then
they complain that foreign pilots don't understand them.
When approching LAX,one night, the controler ordered me :"Speed south...!!!"I
wondered what he was requesting and I asked him to "Say again" and he
repeated twice the same thing !!! Eventually , an American pilot translated
for me : "Speed 180 Kts"
For my stupid logical French brain I was unable to understand. For me speed
is ...a speed and south is a heading, and those two words are completelly
differents.
If we want to speak the same language when flying ,we have to use the same
procedures or we are heading to disasters , at any speed.
