I haven't got my IVP done yet but if I were to do it over again to maximize
for speed I would:
1) put high compression pistons into my tsio-550 (helps cooling at least)
2) get the engine blue printed and balanced and make sure the valves are
perfect
3) replace the intercoolers with a couple of tornado-alley intercoolers
4) buy oversized compressors for the turbos
5) (for climb) buy the cooling kit from Steve Martin
6) get the extended exhaust tunnels from Jack McCallister and straighten out
the pipes
7) consider a cooling plenum
8) bury all my antennas (oops, requires a new airframe and not tcad)
9) get the fastest prop out there (?aero-composites? although the new
Hartzell is not bad)
10) wire the plane with redundant power so it's ready for Prism
....and be careful not to overboost
My current Lancair IV is a non-pressurized 2000 model, with an IO550G2B
(normally aspirated) 280 HP continental and a Hartzell 3 blade cs prop.
The engine and prop were installed brand new and now have 366 (trouble
free) hours TT. I have decided it is time to look into what it take
(cost, sale of existing engine and prop, purchase of a new TSIO550 +
prop, professional installation and anything I may have left out) to
have it upgraded with a brand new TSIO550 + prop. I am not looking for
cheap; rather I am looking for a quality installation that will result
in trouble free usage.
