Ok finally had to get my $0.02 in. Roughing up the surface does in fact
INCREASE surface area. The higher the peaks and valleys the more the
surface area, hence the courser the sandpaper, the rougher the surface, thus
the more the surface area. Think of it this way, would you rather mow the
grass on a flat meadow or one with a lot of mountains with the same outside
dimensions? Thats surface area.
What does happen when one uses finner sandpaper is to reduce the mean
distance between the two surfaces. Cyanoacrylate glues love close surfaces,
they don't fill the gaps very well. Fillers are added to them such as micro
ballons etc. to fill the gaps.
Maybe epoxies act somewhat like cyanoacrylates in that they aren't as strong
when they must fill large gaps. Anybody got input on that?
