...but when I replaced my 1986 O235 engine with a IO320 I used the original conical mount with no problems.
 
I too used the 235 conical mount for my 0-320DIF back in 1989.  Works fine.
 
The conical mount is the smaller straight engine mount style found in the early engines, whereas the dynafocal engine mount is the larger angled style which is currently utilized.
 
A conical engine case can be remachined for use on a dynafocal engine mount.
