Its a long story with many excuses, but the bottom line is I left my gear switch in the up position and turned on the master switch. Before I could react, the nose wheel partially retracted and broke my 3-blade propeller. The prop saved the cowl from any damage. While I was waiting for a new propeller, I installed an airspeed sensitive switch in the pitot line. The switch is adjustable All you have to do is put a piece of vinyl tubing on the pitot tube and blow into it, watching the airspeed indicator and an ohmmeter to show when the switch actuates. You can also hear the switch click. A few turns of the adjustment screw sets the trip point to 70 knots, or whatever speed you like. The switch is rated at 3 amps and is easily wired in series with the "up" wire from the gear selector switch. The switch is available from Ellison Fluid Systems for $62.75, a description can be found on their web site http://www.ellison-fluid-systems.com/accessories/accessories.htm Many Lancairs already have such a switch installed, if you don't, think about it. I didn't believe I would ever do such a dumb thing either!
