After eleven years, the steel wire had deformed enough to pull out of
the nut (smart-a** little voice in my head saying "I told you so"). After
lunch, we flew home no problem - full rich of course, but I'll take that to
the consequences any day!

And that's where the smartness ended-- from redundancy to none at all. Should have got it fixed before you departed. What if the spring failed on the way home?

I haven't had life insurance for 60 years. I finally bought the insurance today. The problem is that the insurance doesn't take effect until tomorrow. What can I do today?

I understand that the house is a very dangerous place. I think that driving around might be worse. Should I sleep at all? Should I fly all day? What should I do? What should I do?

If I get through this day, I am going to put spare wheels and hydraulic systems in the plane. That should stop my gear up and hard landings.

Now back to reality. I have taken off with something not sounding quite right and broken my plane on the way back in. I now try to make myself never take off when anything looks, sounds or feels out of the ordinary.
