I recently purchased (from Lancair) and installed the IO550 Air
Induction kit on my normally aspirated Lancair IV. Upon testing after
installation, I was quite surprised to see only a very modest
improvement in manifold pressure when opening the air induction, no
matter what altitude I tried. I had previously flown in a Legacy with
the same engine (IO550G) and saw considerably more performance
improvement. In the Legacy, flying at 210 kts IAS, I saw a 2.0" MP
increase at 7,500' or above. In my IV I see only a .6" (or less)
increase regardless of altitude. Additionally, at altitude, I saw a 10
knot increase in speed in the Legacy and nearly zero in my IV.
Am I the victim of unrealistic expectations or am I missing something?
If so, why the difference in the Legacy and the IV? I would appreciate
any and all suggestions.
