Wrong application of an old analogy - This is the one used to
reinforce the concept: break the chain of events before it
leads to disaster - When the horseshoe was lost, plan B should have been
used - grab the nearest motorcycle! The nail was missed in the
pre-ride checklist.
Rutan has not remained motionless because he waited for everything to be
TSO'd (as if that makes things perfect) and neither will I. That's
why we fly aircraft called experimental - amateur built. It is not
that you choose to use trash, it's that you understand you are not
placing "faith" in a failure free manufacturer - like Cessna for
instance. However, I must admit, success does require some thought and a
willingness to accept the results of a failed experiment.
