Hi, I am surprised at the response to my video and web
site. I've had many emails and my web site has been
overwhelmed. I have since upgraded my site to handle
the extra volume. It may not be fully implemented for
a day or two. I'm attaching a few seconds of my video
that is available from me for $30. Hopefully you can
load it onto a server for me. This is an inadvertant
spin. This is supposed to be a deep stall with a 1/2
turn spin. The Lancair went around about 3 turns. I
had done many stalls and deep stalls and deeper
stalls/spin entries leading up to this and the
aircraft behaved normally. On this flight we had moved
the CG back from the front part of the envelope, but
not yet half way back. I was doing my utmost to
recover by 1/2 turn, which for most airplanes is quite
easy, and it went around 3 times and lost 1500+ feet.
I started this at 11,500 ft and was wearing a chute. I
would have bailed in about 2 more turns.... We
terminated stall testing at this point and declared
intentional spins a prohibited manuever. I was aware
of the reputation of these airplanes, but all stalls
leading up this were normal (CG forward, stalls, 1/4
turn left, 1/4 turn right, 1/2 turn left, 1/2 turn
right). It is my belief that if you stall these planes
with some yaw, with the CG in the middle or aft, it
will enter an unrecoverable spin. Be careful with your
flight testing or hire a pro! How many builders who do
their own flight testing perform stalls at max gros
weight and aft CG? How many pull max allowable G's at
max weight? How about negative G's. If your planes
entire allowable envelope hasn't been experienced,
then the flight testing isn't complete. Dave at
