As I look at the installed panel pix, I also see a Garmin 430 in the radio
stack and the fanciest Tru-Trak (independent electronic gyros) autopilot that
could be used as a backup in case the AI went out. This assumes all was
wired correctly and tested. Other replies indicate the plane was lost in a
thunderstorm - If that's the case it may not have mattered what was in the
panel. I think I will wait for the NTSB report.

am still waiting for that availability in my 430....
