Your scenarios are possible, but not probable.
First, there wasn't a Blue Mountain in the plane. Second, it looks like he
was flying with the Dynon as primary. Third, he flew into a thunderstorm, by
many accounts I've read. I think the thunderstorm scenario describes the
most probable of all scenarios that could cause real trouble. I don't agree
with flying the Dynon IMC, but I don't see it as being a bad backup either.
As to your comment about the displays being small, the BMA is large, bigger
than a regular 3 inch.
The only one who knows what happened is this poor fellow that was in the
plane- God Bless him.
