Wow. Thanks for all the great information. I leave today for NYC, and here
is what I have researched and am planning to do.
Both LGA and JFK seem like really neat ideas. I would definitely do either
of them, except the parking charge will kill me (we will be up there about
26 hours, maybe even another day). Caldwell NJ sounds fine, except they
don't have an ILS, and I'm not sure about the weather. I've been in and out
of Westchester many times, and while the train is a tempting option, I
couldn't find any evidence of its availability. So Teterboro looks like the
best choice. Specifically, here is some more information I discovered:
LGA: $119 landing fee. This is okay, given that I can save close to that
amount from the car fare into the city. The problem is parking - $25 per 8
hours. Gas is also expensive at about $4 per gallon. The people at
Signature were quite nice and assured me I would have no problems with tie
down or getting in or out. They waive the handling fee with a 10 gallon
fuel purchase. She said the off-peak landing rate was less, but I have to
get there during peak hours.
JFK: The GA ramp is run by the port authority. "Victor" was super nice and
also assured me there would be no problems for a little plane. Gave me taxi
directions over the phone. Landing fee is not bad at $25. Fuel was even
okay at $3.69 / gallon. Again, the problem was parking - $25 per 8 hours.
But the first 8 hours are free.
TEB: Landing fee $15, Million Air (by FAR the cheapest) fuel price $3.29/
gallon. Handling ($30) and two nights parking free with 10 gallons. Ride
to the city is about $25 more than LGA, and although there is bus service, I
won't have time, I'm cutting it close already.
Caldwell - No landing fee and reasonable tie down and fuel, but no ILS and
car service into the city is more expensive.
If I knew for sure we would only be in the city one day, I would choose LGA
if off-peak, or JFK for peak-time landing. I'll try TEB this time and post
to the list when I return.
