My thanks to everyone on the LML who gave suggestions on how to repair the
heat damaged lower cowl on my iv-p with 771 hrs.. I ground out the heat
damaged areas adjacent to both turbos and applied 6 plies of carbon fiber
about 12"X13" and covered the areas with zetex using red RTV as both
adhesive and as a sealant around the edges to prevent freying. After flying
it for for an hour the first time since the repair today, I am pleased to
say that there is no discoloration of the zetex or any sign of the zetex
coming loose. There is no distortion or abnormal appearance of the outer
skin (painted) side of the cowling. I will be happy to post pics here or
email them to anyone who is interested. I would like to express a special
thanks to Bob Pastusek for sharing some of his limited supply of zetex with
me. I was unable to find valid information on suppliers of zetex. I
suspect that this is an expected problem for any Lancair iv that has not
heat sheilded the cowling in some way.
John Wright, iv-p
