With my original factory setup on an O-320-D1F, the carburetor temperature would only increase by 9*F with carburetor heat. This is not enough because I have gotten carburetor ice at 21*F.

I have since switched to an RV-4 full air filtration system and expected to pick up a larger temperature increase when applying carburetor heat. My carburetor temp now raises only 6*F. This is a great time of year to find out because I have time to fix the problem.

I am thinking about putting something between the exhaust pipe and the heat muffler that would pick up more heat off of the exhaust pipe and convey it more readily to the air going into the carburetor and the cabin.

I am thinking about either:
   1) stainless steel wool like "400" Series Stainless Steel Scrubbers"
      at the http://www.keysan.com/ksufl16.htm web sight,
or 2) Kiln heating elements
      at the http://www.hotkilns.com/element-holder.html web sight.

I remember somewhere in a past mailing something about someone shoving something up their heat muffler but I can't find the reference to who or what it was.

I would appreciate anyone's help in locating the reference or just plan commenting on your thoughts and recommendations regarding my problem.
