70 amp 12V
alternator and do they go to 80 amp or larger
Art Bertolina
Hi Art,
I will add what I know here. The TSIO-550E1B has a 65 amp 12V alternator.
That is what the 1B part is. You have a choice of a 100 amp alternator in both
12V and 24V.
At the time I was considering this I keep asking if the recommended 65 amp
could keep up with my loaded system and they kept saying don't worry. The 100
amp is mainly for use with a hot prop (Aluminum). (FYI my MT four blade would
draw 8 amps less than a 3 blade Hartzell's because of the thermal heat transfer
rate, think Heat Sink). I don't have a hot prop but do have a lot of
electrical load. My panel only drew 14 amps while on a bench test, but that didn't
include the remote boxes, Pitot heat, AP servos, and Air Conditioning. As it flies
I only see the Low Voltage light ON when I have everything on and put the
gear up. That gear Hyd. pump draws a lot. I also have the B&C back up alternator
which is rated at 20 amps. but when I talked to the owner he told me that they
would put out 30 amps without any problem but for the FAA certification they
have you power down unneeded things until the Indicator Lamp stops blinking
and remains steady ON. Mine does come on when I put the gear up and at that
point I have 65 amps form the main alt. and 20 amps form the B&C and no blinking
lights. One other thing about loads, if you use a Garmin radio VS my UPS you
will have to put in a cooling fan, which draws a lot and adds heat.
Additionally, I have a back up battery and buss. They put in a 7 amp battery
which wouldn't light up the SFS EFIS (one screen on the essential buss). They
tried a second battery, same thing. Those batteries measured 13+ Volts with no
load and when pushing the Emergency Buss it would drop to 10.5 V in 15
seconds and not work. We replace it with a 17 amp battery and it all works. I still
have to do the duration test to see how long I have on that battery. One
concern is??? How much does it take to lower the gear and get down lock?? I want
to have the flight end Gear down. (Have you tried to pump it down in flight?)
If anyone knows of a way to measure Amp Load in flight? That is one thing the
EFIS won't do? Also, note that the Precise Flight Speed Brakes won't work below
12.4 V's and will not work on the battery alone, mine need the alternator. I
have complained about this, these things shorten the landing roll by 500 ft.
(guess) when used though-out the landing. You won't have them available if no
alternator.
I have attached a picture of my panel for those who want to see all the
lights,
Art, I haven't seen you in Sedona? I'm now in hangar C6.
