FWIW, you might obtain a copy of MIL-STD-1472, a compendium of Human Factors
standards used by the AF for things like cockpit displays and the like. One
thing I remember about cockpit requirements for AF aircraft was the "no
light - no problem" dictum.

Going to a MIL STD might seem a bit of overkill to some but there's a lot of
experience embedded in them and might just give you some ideas that will
make your cockpit even better - and safer.
