In the "for what it's worth" category, I have
talked to Steve Mehalek down at Lycon about engine oil. As you probably
know Lycon is one of the premier engine rebuilders in the country and they go
through a lot of engines, both Lycoming and Continental. Steve is one of
the key people at Lycon, and he's a firm believer in using straight weight oil
-- 50W in warm weather, 40W in cold. Steve said he can walk through the
shop, look at an engine that's been torn down, and tell whether it had been
running straight weight or multi-grade. He says the engines that have been
running straight weight are in better condition.
I expect this may start another lengthy debate (not
my intention), and I realize that this is just one guy's opinion, not the result
of a controlled study. However the opinion comes from a guy with a lot of
experience. Also for what it's worth, my local A&P prefers straight
weight.
