After dealing with numerous issues, we have finally
been able to fly my friend's 320 since the friction-in-roll issue was
raised. To answer Angier's question (sorry Angier, I should have gotten
back to you sooner), no, Don Goetz did not say anything about the friction in
roll. But neither did he say anything about the 1/2" free play in the
aileron control system, nor did he notice a fairly significant leak in the port
fuel tank through the aft spar attach bolts.
It turns out my friend had never lubricated
anything in the aileron control train over the 12-year build period. Nor
had he cinched up all of the fasteners. We went through the whole train
from left aileron control horn to right. All nuts & bolts are torqued,
all bearings are lubricated. She moves sweet and true. I clamped the
right aileron and jiggled the left. There's nary a jiggle to be
had.
We went flying and found that the stick now wants
to head back to the trimmed position. There's no slop in the
controls. We no longer have 2 or 3 gallons of unaccounted-for
fuel after a 2-hour flight.
Life is good!
