I have one Bob Archer SA006 comm antenna in the tail and one behind the
bagage bulkhead and yesterday performed a very non-scientific real world
test of each.
I am 3.65 miles as the (put in bird of choice) flies from Beverly
Airport and my plane is buried in its new workshop. Each antenna was
connected to my Icom handheld via the planes cables. Reception is
excellent from the tower on 125.2 and 121.6. I can clearly hear aircraft
on the ground reading back clearances, although reception is a lot
weaker.
On the transmit side, the Icom IC-A22 has 5.0W(PEP power) and at 12v,
1.5W(Carrier power) the tower cannot hear me but I'm really not
surprised. Aircraft in the air with 2 miles +/- can hear me faintly.
Probably time to move on the the next phase of the project but will
still have some local hams check the vswr.
