<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>

Below is an excerpt reprinted from the STALLION NEWS LETTER,
Volume 6,
No. 1. The news letter is a product of Aircraft Designs owned by
Martin Hollmann.
The Lancair Columbia and the Cirrus SR20 received type certification.
They are both good, fixed wing aircraft, made out of fiberglass, and
they are both related to the Stallion. The wing and tail design for
the Lancair ES (the aircraft from wich the Columbia was designed)
came from the Stallion. On the Columbia however, a new wing airfoil
was selected by its designer (not me). This airfoil was not spin resisant
and as such, cuffs had to be added to the wing tips during certification.
This is an after thought and would not have happened if Lancair had
kept the original (Stallion) ES airfoil. And the Cirrus SR20 is somewhat
of a copy of the Lancair ES.
It is somewhat of a concern to me (and should be to you) that the $20
million certification cost of the Lancair Columbia was paid for by the
government of Indonesia using investment money from the USA. The Indonesian
government paid for this so that jobs building parts are acquired for
their country and they will also reap the profits. It is basically
their aircraft. The Cirrus SR20 was paid for and is owned by the Israel
Aircraft Industry.
Richard Trickel just sold his 4 place KIS Cruiser and the rights to
produce this aircraft to the Chinese.
Toyota is developing a 4 place composite aircraft in Long Beach, Ca.
It seems that other countries are buying USA composite material
technology and aircraft and they will be the producers of the new
generation of composite, general avaition aircraft, while we in the USA
are building old Cessna's made out of aluminum. The news media is not
telling us enough about this ?
Thoughts to ponder while you are looking forward to a new year of prosperity.
Happy New Year and Best of Building to all,
