Thanks for the replies to the question about my starter problem. Looks like I may be buying a new Skytec starter, considering Ken's experience with the same problem.

One. The starter is shorted and when you close the solenoid 300 to 500 amps circulates through the >battery dropping the terminal voltage to 1 volt. (very not likely).

When I turn the key during the hot-start attempt (starter not working), the voltage drops by about 1 volt, not to 1 volt. In other works, I can sit and watch the VMS display -- which normally resets during cranking -- and the voltage display will go from 12.7 v to about 11.7 v when I turn the key. Therefore, some current is flowing to the starter, but not enough. (Voltage is measured at the main bus.)

Two. The battery has an internal, intermittent and temperature dependent open in one of the cells or >intercell connections.  (not likely)

The battery is not getting hot. I do not believe there is a problem with the battery.

Three. One of your connections is corroded and when things get hot it expands and opens. (My first >bet) Remember, when you heat a fastener everything gets bigger, even the gaps.

I've already checked the connections at the battery end when I replaced my solenoid. I'll check the starter end, but I don't think this is the problem -- during my routine inspections, I have looked at the starter connections and found no problems. The plane is new -- no corrosion. My terminals are crimped and then soldered. The first time I noticed the problem was two weeks after the first flight when I attempted a hot start. I believe it's a problem inside the starter. A connection inside the starter is opening up when it gets hot.
