Bet you washed your weights.
Just a little bit of water will make the lead "explode" when the water turns
to steam. Make sure that the lead is completely dry. I once got a face full
of lead from bullets that I had washed to get the soil off them. Covered
the ceiling too!

melt those things down. With all the contamination on the old weights, they
will spit droplets of molten lead quite a ways as they melt.
