I've also had a recent failure of the MAC 6A.  Mine did not completely come apart but ceased to work because the gears no longer were making contact.  This was on a LCN2 so it just did not cause the wanted spring tension etc.   The back bearing plate pushed out as Jim described.  Earl

Upon inspection found the Mac 6A trim motor housing to be broken.  The main trim shaft that works the trim tab had pushed the rear bearing plate out and scattered the gears inside the elevator.
