I'm in the process of ordering a new IO-550N for my Super ES. Not simple. Lanciar advises that the "basic, plain vanilla" 550N now sells for $37,900. However, for only $3800 more, one can buy the Platinum version selling for a mere $41,700. The difference seems to be that the Platinum version is perfectly balanced in all respects, is "hand built/assembled" by a select two man team and has a better warranty [5 yr. parts & labor vs 3 yrs]. One might ask why aren't all engines coming out of the factory built to Platinum standards, but that's not the issue here.
Questions: Can anyone comment on personal experience re: basic vs Platinum? Is the difference between the two worth $3800? Would the Platinum pay off in performance differences and/or resale value a few years down the road? Also, Lancair charges $6400 to have the engine baffles installed [$350.00 more if you want the baffle mounts powder coated] in Redmond. Is baffle installation difficult and/or time consuming...and could it be worth that kind of dough?
