I know somebody who has actually flown the 125 Hp engine.
It does not have the static thrust of a 160 Hp engine... and the takeoff
runs are substantially longer than with the 160 Hp engine in the same
airframe.
I don't think anybody is claiming the 125Hp will be available to 30,000'
And, it remains to be seen if anybody can find a prop that will stay
together with 1600 psi peak cylinder pressures.
In my experience TCM does not fudge their full power ratings on their
normally aspirated IO-550 and TSIO-550 engines. I have measured them on my
dyno and on another dyno.
They ARE too lean at full power, but that isn't "fudge" since TCM rates them
and specs that way.
If they were set up "right" with fuel flow, they would only loose about 1
or 2% in Hp.
Regards, George
PS. How much does the small Renault engine cost ? $80,000 for how many
diesel horsepower ?
