Dan,
   Now you've done it - gone and spoiled it for all the Airbus drivers who
thought they were in control.  You're right though, the stick is just an
interface between the pilots, computers and flight controls with the
computers making all the final decisions. Flying that plane must be like
driving the spaceship in 2001- the crew is there but HAL runs the show.
